Cryptocurrency fraud investigation in Glasgow

What we see in Scotland

Scotland does not report fraud through Action Fraud. Fraud committed in Scotland is reported to Police Scotland on 101, or 999 in an emergency, and cases are prosecuted by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service rather than by the police. Anyone telling you to file with Action Fraud from a Glasgow address has the process wrong.

That difference has practical consequences. There is no national reference number issued the way Action Fraud issues one, so keep the Police Scotland incident or reference number you are given and quote it to your bank and to any exchange you contact.

Civil action in Scotland runs through the Scottish courts under Scots law, which is a separate legal system from England and Wales. If your loss is large enough to consider a claim, take advice from a solicitor qualified in Scotland; the Law Society of Scotland register is the place to check one.

Our office is in Reading and we do not have a Scottish presence. Everything an investigation needs is digital, so location makes no difference to the work itself.

First steps if you have just lost funds

  1. Step 1

    Report to Police Scotland

    Call 101, or use the Police Scotland website. This replaces Action Fraud for anyone reporting fraud in Scotland. Keep the reference number you are given.

  2. Step 2

    Tell the receiving exchange the same day

    Send transaction hashes, dates and amounts. This step is identical wherever you are in the UK and is the most time-critical thing you can do.

  3. Step 3

    Notify your bank in writing

    If money left a UK account or card, report it immediately and keep the written acknowledgement.

  4. Step 4

    Preserve the record

    Capture hashes, addresses, chats and platform screenshots with visible dates and URLs before anything is taken down.
