What to do after a crypto job scam
If you lost funds to a fake crypto job or task platform, stop depositing money immediately, preserve all communication logs and transfer details, and report the fraud to UK authorities. Forensic tracing can follow the flow of assets to assist formal investigative inquiries.
- A crypto job or task scam typically begins with an unsolicited message offering flexible remote work rating apps, placing fake orders, or optimising data, which quickly requires you to deposit your own cryptocurrency to unlock higher commissions or withdraw your earnings.
- Key warning signs include receiving recruitment approaches via messaging apps, working on generic web portals with simulated account balances, being placed into group chats with supposedly successful colleagues, and encountering sudden account freezes that demand fresh capital to resolve negative balances.
- Stop sending funds immediately regardless of any threats or promises that a final payment will release your accumulated balance, and cut off all contact with the handlers while securing any personal accounts you may have exposed during onboarding.
- Preserve complete records of your interactions, including screenshots of the task platform, full chat exports showing recruiter usernames, recruitment web links, deposit transaction hashes, and the precise destination wallet addresses to which you transferred your digital assets.
- Report the incident promptly to Action Fraud online or by telephone, alert your bank if any fiat currency was transferred to purchase the cryptocurrency, and notify the compliance teams at the exchanges where you originally acquired and sent the assets.
- An onchain trace can map where your stolen funds travelled across public networks and identify whether they reached custodial exchanges, but it cannot reveal the real-world identity of an unhosted wallet owner nor guarantee the restitution of your lost capital.
