Each network keeps its own independent ledger with its own rules, fees and address formats. Sending an asset to an address on the wrong network is a common and usually unrecoverable mistake.
For tracing purposes the practical difference is transparency and cost: all major networks publish everything, but low fees make long obfuscation chains affordable and high fees discourage them.
