Securing Digital Asset Exchange Accounts Against Telecommunications Interception and SIM-Swapping
Mobile telecommunications hijacking remains a primary vector used by fraudsters to bypass standard two-factor authentication on exchange accounts. Implementing hardware security keys and time-based authenticator applications significantly reduces the likelihood of unauthorised account access and subsequent onchain asset transfers.
- Replace SMS-based two-factor authentication on all exchange profiles with hardware security keys or dedicated authenticator applications, eliminating reliance on mobile network operators who can be deceived into reassigning your telephone number.
- Request that your mobile telecommunications provider places an explicit verbal password or porting freeze on your account to prevent unauthorised SIM swaps before fraudsters attempt account takeovers.
- If your mobile service unexpectedly drops to emergency calls only, contact your network provider immediately from another handset to verify whether an unauthorised SIM reissue has taken place.
- Notify your exchange compliance team promptly to freeze trading and withdrawals if you suspect account compromise, followed by filing an official report with Action Fraud.
