Why a crypto platform demands tax before withdrawal

Legitimate platforms never demand upfront personal tax payments or clearance fees before allowing you to withdraw funds. If a platform insists you must pay extra money to unlock your balance, the platform is fraudulent and paying more will only increase your financial losses.

  • This fraud occurs when an online trading service freezes your balance and claims that UK tax rules or anti-money laundering requirements demand a separate advance deposit before your withdrawal can be processed.
  • A clear warning sign is when staff claim taxes cannot simply be deducted from your existing account balance, or when they set urgent deadlines and threaten total forfeiture if you do not send fresh deposits.
  • Stop sending money immediately, cease all communication with platform representatives, and do not make further deposits under any pretext, because additional payments will never unlock your original funds or permit withdrawals.
  • Preserve all written communications, wallet deposit addresses, transaction receipts, bank statements, and account screenshots, making sure to record exact dates, times, and amounts transferred rather than relying on live dashboard access.
  • Report the incident promptly to Action Fraud, inform your bank if fiat transfers were made, and notify the compliance teams of any compliant digital asset platforms used to acquire or transmit the initial funds.
  • An onchain trace can identify where your outbound transactions went across public ledgers and establish which custodial platforms accepted the funds, but it cannot force a recipient to return assets without formal legal intervention.
