Fees are paid in the native asset — ETH on Ethereum, TRX or its energy model on Tron, BTC on Bitcoin — regardless of which token is being moved. This is why a wallet can hold a large token balance yet be unable to send anything.
Fee patterns are evidence. A single address quietly funding gas for dozens of receiving wallets is one of the clearer signals that those wallets share an operator.
